During 1908, there was an ongoing critical debate among women about their oppression and inequity. When 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights, the push for reform became louder. The celebrations included events calling for women’s right to vote and an end to gender discriminations. The United Nations started celebrating women’s day in 1975 and the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 8 as International Women’s Day. The UN has been celebrating the day since then, setting up a theme every year. The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’.
Women’s day is celebrated every year on 8th March to spread the message of gender equality and to express the fact that women are no less than men in the society. And there should be no gender bias.
The first National Woman’s Day was observed on February 28, across the US, in 1909. However, it was only in 1975, in International Women’s Year, that the United Nations began celebrating March 8 as International Women’s Day.
This day gives importance to women’s rights movement and raise awareness regarding several issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
