The Congress’s choice for the Amethi incumbent member’s seat in the 2024 election is still unknown to Smriti Irani, who stated on Wednesday that the party’s defeat is shown by the delay. Following the Congress’s defeat in 2019, there were strong rumours that Smriti Irani might run again for the seat, this time against Rahul Gandhi. The party’s unusually long announcement delay on the Amethi candidate’s identity is peculiar. Until the Amethi candidate is announced, a great deal of thinking is done. As Smriti Irani put it, “This is a sign of defeat all by itself.”
Speculations were rife after Congress Amethi district president Pradeep Singhal claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s name would be announced soon as the Amethi candidate.
The central committee for the party’s elections has not met or issued any statements, nor has the central leadership of the party. Following a conference in Delhi, Singhal made his way back to Amethi.
