INDIAN-ORIGIN STUDENT SHOT DEAD IN TORONTO UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, SPARKS SHOCK ACROSS CANADA

The unidentified attackers fled from the scene immediately after the incident

A wave of shock and grief has swept across Canada following the alleged shooting death of an Indian-origin student near the University of Toronto campus. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi, an Indian student pursuing medical studies at the University of Toronto.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on December 23, 2025, near the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area, close to the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Shivank was allegedly shot by unidentified attackers, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Police stated that they received a call reporting a disturbance in the area. Upon reaching the spot, officers found a male victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Reacting to the incident, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep anguish over the loss. In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Consulate confirmed that it is providing all necessary assistance to the bereaved family.

“We express deep anguish over the tragic death of a young Indian doctoral student, Mr Shivank Avasthi, in a fatal shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus,” the statement read. The Consulate further added that it is in close coordination with local authorities and remains in constant touch with the family during this difficult time.

Investigations are currently underway and police are searching for the suspects involved in the shooting.
