On April 2, 2023, as India marks 12 years after winning the World Cup, Shastri issued a special message to MS Dhoni. The winning six was hit by “Captain Cool,” ending India’s 28-year wait for their lone second Cricket World Cup victory. According to Shastri, the victory is “one of the glorious epic moments” in Indian cricket history, and no Indian fan will ever forget Dhoni’s valour.
“Many congratulations; I think your day in Chennai will be memorable. It’s been 12 years since you helped India win the World Cup for the second time in 28 years, making history. My memory of that particular day when you struck that six to lead India across the finish line and win the world cup for a second time is so vivid “Speaking in an ICC video, Shastri.
“It has been 12 years since that day, but as I have indicated, everyone still remembers it. All I can say is that what you accomplished that day was truly exceptional. Any Indian cricket fan who follows the sport and supports it internationally will undoubtedly remember it forever. Despite being 12 years ago, it feels like yesterday.”
